Spring Break 2007: "Show us your torts!" Ah, spring break. The time when young hearts are drawn to warmer places with plentiful booze. For me, that was Maho Bay, St. John's. As we got off the plane in St. Thomas, it only took about 45 minutes to get our checked luggage (damn you, red bag that kept confusing me as you made the conveyor belt loop dozens of times). Since I learned that Maho Bay doesn't sell hard alcohol, that was first on my list. Jeff and I settled on a bottle of Mount Gay rum (eventually, some of the letters wore off until we called it "Out Gay"). The camp ground that we were staying at was on the national park portion of the island and was "eco-friendly." Which I think means it recycles glass into art and tries not to use too much water. Beyond that, I'm not sure how it was an eco-camp. We had nice tent/bungalow/hut/things. Josh, Steph, and I were in one; Jeff, Lee, and Kolber were in the other. Maho Bay appears to be the destination of choice for old people and families from the Midwest. Other than the camp staff and children, I'm pretty sure we were the only ones there under 40. This made for a pretty quiet, laid-back atmosphere, which is more my thang than the frat-scene. There certainly was plenty to keep us busy. Obviously, we spent a good deal of time on the beach: playing frisbee, 500 (which doesn't work too well with a volleyball), kayaking, and snorkeling. I have also come to the realization that I am incapable of applying sun block. No matter how hard I try to apply evenly and reapply, I still end up red and splotchy. It wasn't too bad -- until the last day when I was kayaking at noon. My shins became almost purple. Next time, I am going to buy a gallon of SPF 100, bathe in it, wear a burka, and then stay out of the sun. There was also some heavy-duty hiking (in the rain), card-playing, and an evening in Cruz Bay. Overall, I consider this break a raging success: relaxing, learning two new favorite drinks (Bushwhacker and Painkiller), doing some light beach reading, eating well, the birth of many an inside joke, and new friends.
