I was in Jaws, G*ddammit!

I just had the weirdest/most hilarious experience in my law school career, and I have no choice but to share it.

So, tonight we invited David Black (producer/writer) to come to HLS to talk about "Conflict Resolution in Hollywood." Naturally, I thought it would be interesting, so I went along as the Drama Society "liaison" (which is French for "I carried a stack of pizzas") -- out of the goodness of my heart, not just for the resume-padding, thank you very much. So anyway, I'm sitting in the front row, waiting for this shindig to start, and then I see two men in their 50s come in. I think to myself: "That one guy looks like Richard Dreyfuss!" At the same time, Simon, who is sitting next to me, turns and says "Hey, check out Mr. Holland's Opus." So, we have a good chuckle about our common thought, and then proceed to talk about Richard Dreyfuss and what hilarious things he has been up to. Well, the time comes for the presentation to start, and our guest speakers are introduced: "Please welcome Mr. David Black, and Richard Dreyfuss." My first thought was then: "Why is Richard Dreyfuss at HLS?" followed by "Oh crap, I hope he didn't just hear me talking smack about him." But he didn't seem to shoot me any dirty looks. The talk begins, and when R.D. starts, he asks if anyone is planning to be an entertainment lawyer. I raise my hand about halfway, and he sort of laughs and says it's funny that I didn't raise my hand up high (funny nothing, I ran out of deodorant today -- sorry to anyone who was in my vicinity). Then he proceeded to say (I'm paraphrasing) how Hollywood will eat my soul, I go to Harvard and I should go do something that brings good into the world, that it's a meaningless existence and just amounts to a salary. Of course, I wanted to say: "You're right! I'm going to get as far away from LA and go work for insurance companies or monolithic corporate evil!" But I thought that might be in bad taste to the rest of my classmates. From there, I was treated to an hour-long anecdote fest about the hell of What about Bob? and more terrific stories. All in all, one of the most entertaining and enlightening experiences I have had at HLS.

Spring Break! Vienna, Prague, Budapest

So, 1L year I went to the Virgin Islands for a little fun in the sun. And this year? Snow in Europe! While the weather might not have been super "spring-y," the experience was more than worth it. What's not to love? Good food, good beer, and great culture! Here are some of my thoughts:

Vienna:
Beautiful city, and it was very convenient to have all of the museums I wanted to visit nearby each other. And there were several! Also, the U-bahn was quite impressive in its cleanliness and efficiency (you hear that, MBTA? Learn a thing or two). The best meal of the whole trip was the first night in Vienna at a polish restaurant. I had some veal goulash that was amazing, and a magical concoction of dumplings cooked in beer with cheese and fried onions. A heart attack on a plate, but worth every artery-clogging bite. I also learned that I rather enjoy Art Nouveau. Another fun fact: people no longer dress up for the opera. Sad, really. I would think that if I were to go to the Vienna State Opera, I would not be out of place in black tie (and many of the guides I read said black tie was the appropriate attire). Well, I was wrong. No matter, I still enjoyed myself looking like a million bucks next to the plebeians.

Prague:
I'm afraid that Prague has become a pit of Tourists. It was almost like Disney World. The streets were packed with people, vendors selling kitsch, and there was a McDonald's. It's hard to imagine that it in the recent past it was Soviet occupied. And now, it's polluted with people (even in March!), and is no longer as charming as I had imagined. However, I did enjoy fulfilling my dream of rereading The Unbearable Lightness of Being while I was there. While I'm not a big beer drinker, the Pilsner-Urquell was quite good and relatively cheap (although not 25 cents like it once was).

Budapest:
This ended up being my favorite part of the trip. And why not? More goulash, warm weather, beautiful coffee-houses. All I have to say is: don't go to the baths. Just trust me.

Spring Semester Round Up

OK, I know I said I would be updating this more regularly. And it's not for sheer laziness that I have failed in that mission. The sad truth is that there has just not been a lot to report over the past few months. Allow me to illustrate:

Day-to-day: pretty much the same routine
Afternoon-evening: First, it was spent with Parody, which I couldn't talk about because of the Code of Silence. Then, once Parody began, I was clearly too busy partying (again, about things I can't talk about. Let's just say some of the stories involved undergrads, Teddy Roosevelt, and a cat).

So what has there been to talk about? Well, two things, one of which I will address in this post

Restaurant Week(s):
Yay! Who doesn't love gorging on $33.08 dinners? I know I do. Granted, two of my dinners were from the same restaurant, Gargoyle, in Davis Square. I don't know what it was about Gargoyle, but I was sick both nights, from two totally separate meals. Nobody else was sick, just me. Weird. I think I have a delicate system or an allergy or something. Either way, it was still good, if kind of hit-or-miss. The only particularly remarkable restaurant week outing was at the Chart House, where I ordered off the regular menu: prime rib, coconut shrimp, baked potato, and a volcanic mountain of chocolatey goodness. Toss in a few bottles of syrah and it was a great night, and I ended up digesting for the next week.

Next up: Spring Break!
