I was in Jaws, G*ddammit!

I just had the weirdest/most hilarious experience in my law school career, and I have no choice but to share it.

So, tonight we invited David Black (producer/writer) to come to HLS to talk about "Conflict Resolution in Hollywood." Naturally, I thought it would be interesting, so I went along as the Drama Society "liaison" (which is French for "I carried a stack of pizzas") -- out of the goodness of my heart, not just for the resume-padding, thank you very much. So anyway, I'm sitting in the front row, waiting for this shindig to start, and then I see two men in their 50s come in. I think to myself: "That one guy looks like Richard Dreyfuss!" At the same time, Simon, who is sitting next to me, turns and says "Hey, check out Mr. Holland's Opus." So, we have a good chuckle about our common thought, and then proceed to talk about Richard Dreyfuss and what hilarious things he has been up to. Well, the time comes for the presentation to start, and our guest speakers are introduced: "Please welcome Mr. David Black, and Richard Dreyfuss." My first thought was then: "Why is Richard Dreyfuss at HLS?" followed by "Oh crap, I hope he didn't just hear me talking smack about him." But he didn't seem to shoot me any dirty looks. The talk begins, and when R.D. starts, he asks if anyone is planning to be an entertainment lawyer. I raise my hand about halfway, and he sort of laughs and says it's funny that I didn't raise my hand up high (funny nothing, I ran out of deodorant today -- sorry to anyone who was in my vicinity). Then he proceeded to say (I'm paraphrasing) how Hollywood will eat my soul, I go to Harvard and I should go do something that brings good into the world, that it's a meaningless existence and just amounts to a salary. Of course, I wanted to say: "You're right! I'm going to get as far away from LA and go work for insurance companies or monolithic corporate evil!" But I thought that might be in bad taste to the rest of my classmates. From there, I was treated to an hour-long anecdote fest about the hell of What about Bob? and more terrific stories. All in all, one of the most entertaining and enlightening experiences I have had at HLS.
